VoiceThread: Supporting Students

This page includes resources you can add to your course and/or VoiceThread Presentations to support students! This page is not meant for students! Instead, place these resources in your course to save you and your students time!

Helping Students Get Started!

If you plan to use VoiceThread throughout your course, just like any other activity, students get better with time! As an ease into VoiceThread, begin with a very basic low stakes activity where students simply learn to navigate and leave a voice or video comment. An Ice Breaker Activity in VoiceThread is a great way to introduce students to VoiceThread and to each other.

Example Ice Breaker

Below is an example of a VoiceThread Ice Breaker from a course on early literacy development. Students introduce themselves, share their early literacy experiences, and their reason for taking the course. In addition to meeting peers, this activity gets students thinking about the course topic and lets the instructor learn more about students’ reasons for taking the course.

Student Support Slides

The following slides have been created to help you build student support into your VoiceThread. This is not a slide deck for students to view. Instead, it contains pre-made slides and videos for you to add to a VoiceThread to support students. You can preview the slides below.

Generate your own copy of these slides to add to your Google Drive bookmark for future use.

VoiceThread CI Learn Assignments

VoiceThread is an ideal tool for discussions, mini-lectures, Q&A forums, student or group presentations. The instructions below will help you, the instructor, set up VoiceThread as an Assignment in CI Learn.

For Instructors: Setting Up the Assignment in CI Learn

There are three types of VoiceThread Assignments you can create in CI Learn:

  • Watch: Perfect for recording mini lectures or demonstrating a skill. Students watch the VoiceThread and click Submit when finished viewing.
  • Comment: Students leave voice, video or text comments and threaded replies to a discussion stimulus. Students can also add slides/media to extend content shared and discussed.
  • Create: Students create their own VoiceThread and share it with the class. This is useful for student/group presentations, Video Logs (Vlogs), curated galleries, etc.
